Tatsuro Murakami

Tatsuro Murakami is a Tokyo-born guitarist, composer, and music producer whose work bridges Japanese and Brazilian music cultures. Born in 1995, his early musical influences stemmed from collecting vinyl and CDs as a teenager, with a deep interest in 70s progressive rock, 80s–2000s alternative, jazz, blues, and soul. After high school, Murakami moved to Brazil to study guitar and immerse himself in the country’s musical traditions. In 2016, he entered the Choro Department at the Conservatório de Tatuí, the largest music conservatory in Latin America, becoming one of the few Japanese artists to be embraced by the local music community. While in Brazil, he apprenticed under acclaimed film composer Gui Amabis, contributing to music for films and Netflix series. After returning to Japan, Murakami worked at a Tokyo-based music production company, creating soundtracks for major TV commercials in Japan and overseas.

As a solo artist, he has released five albums on international labels including Mystery Circles (US) and Whitelabrecs (UK). He is also a guitarist with Stone Music, the successor to Japan’s legendary experimental group Taj Mahal Travellers. In 2024, they released an album through Australia’s experimental label ROOM40. Fluent in both Japanese and Portuguese, Murakami has worked as a translator and simultaneous interpreter, specializing in art and music. In 2024, he organized a guitar concert featuring João Camarero and Shin Sasakubo, in partnership with the Brazilian Embassy and Arts Council Tokyo. Currently, he serves as the label manager for Mystery Circles in Japan and as music director for Kankyo Records, a Tokyo-based ambient label. His work continues to explore the intersection of tradition and experimentation across cultures.
