Area Flood
An active member of the Milwaukee music community, Steve Zydek (Wavefiler) regularly hosts music events around the city. In March 2025, he organized a night of music at the Cactus Club with Sam Prekop and Lorna Dune, an evening that brought together the city’s thriving synth community and adjacent underground scenes.
That spirit continued a few months later, in August, with another show curated by Zydek at Anodyne Coffee, this time featuring Ryan J. Raffa, Lorna Dune, and Mahlmeister/Schoenecker.
Throughout that evening of unforgettable performances, a packed house inside Anodyne shared in something much greater unfolding outside its windows. In what came to be known as the “Milwaukee Area Floods,” torrential rain, lightning, and massive flooding lashed the city and surrounding suburbs. In the midst of that historic “1,000-year storm", the music in the room seemed to rise to meet it.
This split 7” brings together Wavefiler and two of his musical guests, Raffa and Prekop, for a rumination on the forces of nature.
Across the record, low pulses, flickering harmonics, sustained tones, and tape-like drift gather into a wide field of sound. The music feels spacious but never still, hovering between calm and unease, with warm frequencies swelling like water rising in the dark. What begins as atmosphere becomes a meditation on pressure, shelter, and exposure: a response to nature’s force not as backdrop, but as memory, vibration, and shared experience.
