Bow and Arrow
The new album from Berlin-based French musician arc rae grew out of a series of freely improvised recordings by cellist, vocalist, and composer Mathilde Vendramin. Captured in an open, unplanned state, her cello and voice became the raw material for a process of transformation: fragments selected, reshaped, layered, and reassembled into fully formed compositions.
Working with a collage-like approach, arc rae draws out hidden rhythms, melodies, and textures from Mathilde’s performances, weaving them into pieces that balance acoustic intimacy with electronic detail. Generative soundscapes, precise motifs, intricate beats, and tactile fragments move together with a sense of instinctive structure, as if each track is discovering its own shape in real time.
The result is a collection of works that feel distinct yet deeply connected, carrying the loose narrative flow and exploratory spirit of a beat tape. Bow and Arrow turns improvisation into architecture, letting form emerge from impulse, vulnerability, and chance.
