Unresting
This track was written during the CoVid-19 lockdown of 2020, immediately following the death of George Floyd. The lockdown provided ample material for considering familiar things in unfamiliar ways, and this track was one of many attempts to process the sorrow, joy, anger, love, and complexity of this time. As sadness and hopelessness reached me through the news and social media, the birds chirped away in my back yard, the same as ever. The dichotomy of that - that things could be so broken in one place and so normal in another - broke my heart. And so the song was composed with a series of tape loops, each a different length, each a different speed. Several very simple phrases phase in and out with each other, sometimes in harmony, sometimes in discord; notes swirling together, attempting to understand one another. Succeeding, failing, trying again. It resolves peacefully, as that is my hope for the generation that I am part of.
Recorded at Otaku, mixed by Dustin Ragland at Mir, and Mastered by Taylor Deupree at 12K.
